VARNA, Bulgaria: Chinese dancer Sinuo Chang and Canadian ballerina Yuan Zhe Zi Xuan, also known as Jessica Xuan, won the most prestigious awards at the Varna International Ballet Competition, the oldest competition in the world. ballet of the world.

Several of the biggest names in ballet have won their first international recognition at the competition, held in the "seaside capital" of Bulgaria.

Past winners include Russians Mikhail Baryshnikov, Natalia Makarova and Vladimir Malakhov, Canadian ballerinas Evelyn Hart and Martine van Hamel, and French dancers Sylvie Guillem and Patrick Dupond

Chang, winner of the 2017 Vienna International Competition, won first place in the senior category for men aged 19 to 26 after progressing through the three rounds of the competition.

The dancers, separated into two age groups – seniors and juniors, participated in the competition events at the Outdoor Theater Couples or Soloists

Xuan, an elegant dancer of the Dutch National Ballet, won the senior women's division with the 21-year-old American ballerina Katherine Barkman, currently invited dancer for Ballet Manila, finishing in second place.

The competition in Varna is among the most prestigious ballet events alongside competitions in Moscow, Helsinki and Jackson.

International Summer Ballet Academy with the participation of Bulgarian and overseas teachers has also been organized in Varna in the last two weeks.

A gala concert, dedicated to the president of the jury Vladimir Vasiliev, known as "The god of dance", which marks its 60th anniversary on stage, will be held Monday.
