SINGAPORE – Filming began for the film adaptation of The Garden of Evening Mists, the award-winning novel by Penang-born writer Tan Twan Eng.
Set to premiere in 2019, the film will be shot in Malaysia Places such as Cameron Highland tea plantations, Malaysian film production company Astro Shaw and partners HBO Asia and the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (Finas) announced Monday, July 2
Tan's second novel published in 2012 for the Man Booker and won the Man Asian Literary Award and the Walter Scott Award for Historical Fiction.
Directed by Taiwanese director Tom Lin, the film takes place in the 1950s and 1980s and features an international cast. Award-winning Taiwanese director and actress, Sylvia Chang, plays the main character Teoh Yun Ling, a judge who looks back on her life during the Japanese occupation of Malaysia. She commissions to Nakamura Aritomo, a Japanese gardener played by Japanese actor Hiroshi Abe, to draw a garden in memory of his sister, who died in a Japanese internment camp during the war.
The film also stars Malaysian actress / singer Lee Sinje, who won the Golden Horse Award for best actress for the 2002 horror film The Eye and Singaporean actress Tan Kheng Hua
