MOBILE, AL (WALA) –

The initial case of Vibrio in 2018 was reported to the County Health Department of Mobile.

The case is currently under investigation by the Division of Infectious Diseases and Epidemics of the Department of Health, according to a statement released Thursday morning

. According to the Ministry of Health, the exposure occurred in the Mobile River and the infection was identified as Vibrio vulnificus.

Due to patients' privacy rights under the Federal Act on Portability and Public Health Insurance Liability.

Vibrio bacteria live naturally in some coastal waters and are present at higher concentrations between May and October when water temperatures are warmer. However, bacteria can be present throughout the year in some areas. While Vibrio bacteria can enter the body through skin breakdown, they can also come from the consumption of contaminated seafood.

The Alabama Department of Public Health issued a press release titled "Do not go into the water plans if you have cuts or abrasions; if injured, clean the immediately plague to reduce the risk of infection. "Here is the link: http://www.alabamapublichealth.gov/news/2018/06/15.html.

On more than 70 species of Vibrio that exists, about a dozen can cause human diseases – known as Vibriosis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that every year in the United States, 80,000 people contract vibriosis and 100 die of their infection.
As of July 18, ADPH reports that there have been eight cases of Vibriosis (non-Cholera) examined and verified at the state level. In 2017, seven cases of Vibriosis have been reported to the MCHD.
