Although vaping may seem less dangerous than smoking cigarettes, it is one of the most common drawbacks of lung health. The month of October is the month of healthy lungs and there are countless ways to take care of your respiratory system.
According to the National Center for Health Research, vaping has not only become the most common method of using nicotine in young people, but has turned away from its original purpose.
The long-term adverse effects of cigarette and tobacco use are known, but the same can not be said for vaping.
"We do not have enough data," said Julie Sanz, assistant director of the Wellness and Nurse Practitioner Center at Stevenson University. "Unfortunately, I think this teenage population is going to be the guinea pig."
JUULs, which are nicotine-packed, more concentrated, have become extremely popular among high school students and students thanks to an attractive marketing campaign. According to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Children, JUULs are used by more than 2.1 million young people in the United States alone.
"Nicotine addiction is very harmful to young people," said Jalyn Briscoe, a second-year nursing student at Stevenson. "It's because the younger they start, the longer they will use it when they get older, and there is less chance that they will stop smoking."
The National Center for Health Research also said that vaping could be a gateway to nicotine. As such, this can lead them to start smoking, whereas if they had never been winnowed, they would never have smoked at first.
CAUSES LUNG PROBLEMS
The environment can also play an important role in lung health. "The air is drier and cooler in the winter," Briscoe said, "making breathing more difficult for people with existing lung problems." As you continue to smoke, various infections could become pneumonia or worsen.
In the spring, people with asthma and seasonal allergens must always be aware of the triggers. According to WebMD, this could include pollen exposure or nicotine consumption. WebMD also suggests downloading an application called WebMD Allergy that tells viewers that pollen levels are safe.
Unhealthy lung symptoms can be easy to identify, but they can also be unobtrusive. According to the Office on Women's Health, shortness of breath, chronic cough and chest pain are just some of the possible symptoms of poor lung health.
Lung cancer is one of the most complicated lung problems because it may require a lung transplant. "I saw that it took the lives of young people," Sanz said. "What starts in the lungs can lead to something in the liver, breast or abdominal tissues."
Many young people think that their youth protects them from serious health problems, but this is not the case. "Young people need to be more concerned about their lungs," said Briscoe, "because if damage occurs at a young age, it's almost impossible to fix it."
ON CAMPUS RESOURCES
Resources are available for students who need help on and off campus. Sanz added: "The [Baltimore County Health Department] can work with people for free to stop smoking any type of nicotine-based product. This includes free counseling, medication, and supportive group therapy. Chantix and nicotine gum are also available at the wellness center.
The fitness center is also a resource, as fitness plays a vital role in respiratory health. "You can exercise your lungs as you can exercise your muscles," said Sanz.
Although some complications may occur, lung health is almost always based on the decisions each person makes. By going the right way, non-smokers can make a difference not only in their lives, but also in the lives of those around them.
