English novels tell stories about life and history
HONG KONG, July 3, 2018 – (ACN Newswire) – The 29th edition of the Book Fair of Hong Kong, organized by the HKTDC, will be held from July 18 to 24 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. Highlights include the series of seminars on reading and creative writing in English, which this year represents a collaboration between the HKTDC and an international online bookstore – Book Depository – for the first time.
Young writers Mr. A. Bennett of the United Kingdom and Sharlene Teo and Balli Kaur Jaswal of Singapore will share with the public how their life experiences led them to write careers. Mark O'Neill, a Hong Kong journalist, and Denise Y. Ho, assistant professor of history at Yale University, will also present their new books on Chinese history
Balli Kaur Jaswal – The Female Perspective
Balli Kaur Jaswal, a young Singaporean popular writer of Indian descent, has been exposed to various cultures while growing up, having lived in Japan, Russia and the Philippines. His short stories and nonfiction have been published in numerous international journals, including the UK's Sunday Express and the New York Times. She received the Sydney Young Herald's Best Young Australian Novel Award 2014 for her first novel "Inheritance." The novel tells about the evolution of society and the decline of the family through the story of the death of a female tribe.
The author published his third and latest novel, Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows, last year. Through a touching story about the life of a widow, the book reveals the plight of immigrant communities in the United States and Europe. Her vivid portrayal of the protagonist makes an engaging reading and helps bring out issues in women's contemporary lives. The novel quickly received high marks. His translation rights have been sold in more than 10 countries including France, Greece and China, and the book will soon be adapted into a film. At the Book Fair, she will discuss how Indian women inspire characters for novels.
M.A. Bennett – Campus Thriller Literature
Born in Manchester in the United Kingdom and raised in the Yorkshire Dales, Mr. Bennett is a promising young writer of fiction. She graduated in history from the University of Oxford and the University of Venice, where she specialized in the study of Shakespeare's plays as a historical source. She has been an illustrator, actress and film critic, and has designed touring visuals for rock bands such as U2 and the Rolling Stones. At the book fair, Bennett will share unpublished stories about the development of the British social class system.

Sharlene Teo – Inspired by Smog
Singaporean writer Sharlene Teo published her first Ponti novel this year, which received immediate attention from readers and praise from the UK's best-selling novelist, Ian McEwan. She is currently studying for a doctorate in creative writing. The book received the inaugural Deborah Rogers Writer's Award, which encourages new writers to complete their first work, having defeated 855 competitors.
The book was inspired by the smog that enveloped Singapore and created a dark mood in 2003. Mark O Neill – The Jews in China brought to light
Mark O Neill, who has lived in Hong Kong for nearly 40 years, still attend the Book Fair and organize a seminar. Born in London in the UK, Mr. O. Neill is a writer, journalist and university professor. He has been a correspondent for the South China Morning Post in Shanghai and Beijing for years, and is fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin. He has extensive knowledge of Chinese culture and has always been interested in current affairs in Hong Kong and Greater China.
As a researcher in Chinese history, Mr. O. Neill has written many books on Chinese history and personalities. as one on the legendary life of Sir Hurd, the head of the Department of Customs Taxation in the Qing Dynasty, which was launched at the Book Fair last year. This year, he will bring his latest work, Israel and China: from the Tang Dynasty to Silicon Wadi, presenting stories of Jews in China over the past 40 years, including dairy farmers, computer experts, professors, diplomats, traders as well as the first and only non-ethnic Chinese woman to have established a hospital chain in China.

Mr. O Neill not only made a special trip to Beijing, Shanghai and Israel to conduct research and numerous interviews, including with Jewish rabbis, businessmen, entrepreneurs, teachers and journalists. Denise Y. Ho – Reconstruction of Chinese History
Denise Y. Ho, born in the United States, has a family of Hong Kong origin. She holds a PhD in history from Harvard University, and is an Assistant Professor at Yale University, having taught at the Center for China Studies at the Hong Kong Chinese University. His research focuses on contemporary Chinese society and cultural history.
Earlier this year, Ms. Ho launched her first book Curating Revolution: Politics on Display of Mao's China, centered on the Mao Zedong era (1949-1976). He explores the links between exhibitions and political movements, showing that exhibitions help turn revolutions into reality. Through Shanghai case studies, the book analyzes how the Chinese communist revolution has reformed the country's political culture. At the Book Fair, the writer will share with the audience how she has gone through archival documents, oral history and other historical data for the book.
