"They (the police) mentioned a park near highways 6 and I-59, and that's the first park we think of, and it's a big park, a lot of grass, a lot of trails, "said Dominique Bryant A friend of the family told CNN affiliate, KPRC. "And I thought we could pass leaflets because this park is always busy."

Maleah's father-in-law, Darion Vence, reported his disappearance on Saturday.

The Houston police department issued an Amber alert for the girl after Vence told authorities that her 2-year-old son and Maleah had been "kidnapped by 3 men on Friday night."

A father-in-law claims that a Hispanic man struck him

Vence told the detectives that Maleah and his son were traveling Friday night to George Bush Intercontinental Airport to pick up Maleah's mother, who was from Massachusetts, Sgt. Mark Holbrook of the Homicide Division of the Houston Police Department said.

Holbrook stated that the stepfather claimed to have heard a "popping sound", like a flat tire, and stopped to check.

It's at this point that a blue van stopped behind the vehicle and two Hispanic men came out, Vence told the police.

One of them reportedly said, "Maleah looks very nice, very kind," said Holbrook, citing Vence's statement to the officers. The other man hit Vence in the head and he lost consciousness, he told the police.

Holbrook: "Many whites in history"

When Vence woke up, he said, he was at the back of the truck with Maleah and his brother – with three Hispanic men also in the vehicle.

He told the police that he was in and out of consciousness until about 6 pm. Saturday, when he woke up on Route 6 with the 2 year old boy. Maleah was gone, said Vence. He walked to a nearby hospital, where he was treated and reported the disappearance of the girl.

Holbrook told reporters Sunday, "I realize that there are a lot of whites in the story." He added that the police hoped that the public could help them "fill the gaps" in the story provided by Vence.

Maleah underwent several brain surgeries, police say

At a press conference, Holbrook confirmed that the girl had undergone several brain surgeries, most recently, late March-early April, he said.

Surgeries were supposed to help heal an injury, he said.

"She needs a lot of attention," he said. "This week, she was sick too."

Police identified the mark of the two cars

The police posted representative photos of the blue van Vence claimed to be driving by the kidnappers.

The alert launched by the city describes the car as a "blue Chevy Crew Cab, possibly a 2010 model".

The vehicle that Vence was driving – a silver Nissan Altima owned by Maleah's mother – has also disappeared, Holbrook said.

A traffic camera captured an image of the car crossing an intersection in Sugar Land just before 3 pm Saturday afternoon.
