A man engaged in a business dispute with a woman in Palo Alto allegedly stole his cell phone and crushed it with his gold 2005 Honda CR-V as he fled the scene last week, police said on Friday.
Officers and firefighters responded to an emergency call on September 24 at around 11:30 a.m. in the 3400 block of El Camino Real near the Creekside Inn and found a woman in her 40s sitting on the pavement. The vehicle that hit her fled. Paramedics transported the woman to hospital. She suffered serious injuries – several bone fractures – which required hospitalization, but her condition is stable, police said in a press release.
The woman, a cashier at a nearby spa and massage business, and the man, a customer, got into an argument when the man said his credit card receipt did not reflect the amount of the tip he had added, according to police. He took his copies of the receipt and those of the merchant and left.
The woman followed the man and called his supervisor on his cell phone. As he got into his car, she attempted to take the copy of the merchant’s receipt from him. He tried to pick up his phone as he started to walk away, police said.
While trying to hold her phone, she fell. One of the rear wheels of the man’s car rolled over him as he fled. The woman’s cell phone could not be found and police suspect the man managed to confiscate it from her during the scuffle, police said.
