URBANA – A Champaign man wanted in an August shooting was arrested on Tuesday when he appeared at the courthouse probation office.
A money order with a $ 1 million bond was issued three weeks ago for Johnny E. Weatherall, 27, who listed an address in the 1200 block of North Champaign Street.
Weatherall is charged with battery aggravated with a firearm and illegal use of a weapon by a criminal for allegedly shooting a woman in the 2600 block of West Springfield Avenue on August 23.
A police report from Champaign said the woman was on the porch of an apartment in the Countrybrook Apartments complex dressing another person’s hair when she heard several gunshots.
The woman eventually fell, being shot in the leg. She was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Police recovered several shell casings suggesting that shots were fired both from the street towards a residence and from a residence towards the street.
Witnesses gave police a description of the gunman who fired at the apartment and of a car he was in that drove police to Weatherall.
Court records show that he was previously convicted of possession of cannabis and aggravated criminal sexual abuse as a minor and adult, aggravated assault and battery, obstruction of justice and domestic assault.
If convicted of battery aggravated with a gun, Weatherall faces six to 30 years in prison.
