A 36-year-old Californian managed to live at Chicago’s O’Hare International for three months, according to prosecutors and the Chicago Tribune.
Aditya Singh, 36, has been charged with felony trespassing in a restricted area of an airport and theft.
Police say Singh visited O’Hare on October 19 but was afraid to return home due to the coronavirus.
“It shows how things can go through the cracks,” said transport expert Joseph Schwieterman. “You get an idea at the airport and can go weeks undetected. It is truly remarkable that in this time, in our time and in our level of security, this has happened.
On Saturday, two United Airlines employees approached Singh and asked for his identity. It displayed a badge, but it actually belonged to an operations manager who reported it missing on October 26. The employees then called 911.
“A lot of people are probably looking back and are embarrassed, gate officers, who probably saw this individual,” Schwieterman said.
Singh said he was able to survive by obtaining food from other passengers.
“There’s no real security risk here, that’s the good news,” Schwieterman added. “It just shows how different parties can not talk to each other, question each other.”
The Chicago Department of Aviation, which oversees the city’s airports, issued the following statement regarding the incident:
“CDA is no higher priority than the safety and security of our airports, which are maintained by a coordinated network and multiple levels of law enforcement. Although this incident is still under review. investigation, we were able to determine that this gentleman did not pose a risk to security, the airport or the traveling public.We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners on a full investigation into this matter. ”
