SINGAPORE – A man seeking a court order for his 16-year-old daughter to be vaccinated against COVID-19 has claimed he had “no alternative” after his ex-wife “strongly opposed” the jab.

The man asks the authorities to allow the girl to be vaccinated and his ex-wife, who has shared custody of their child, to cover his legal costs, according to a CNA report.

In his affidavit he wrote that there had been no previous custody, care and control issues.

The ex-couple, who married in 2003, could not amicably resolve the issue of their child’s vaccination despite numerous discussions.

None of the parties involved can be named as the girl is a minor.

According to family court documents, the man, a permanent resident, filed for divorce in 2015 after living apart from his Singaporean wife for three years.

“I am vaccinated and wish (my daughter) was vaccinated too,” wrote the man, represented by attorney Chung Ting Fai.

“This is especially after the government announced the current policy of living with the virus which is accompanied by the recent increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Singapore.”

Most of his daughter’s classmates were also vaccinated, added the man, who is now remarried.

The affidavit was accompanied by a letter from the girl, which also expressed her desire to be vaccinated. “I want to be immune to the virus so even if I catch it my chances of getting seriously ill are inhibited.”

The girl added that she hopes to travel, socialize, dine out and watch a movie.

Her mother did not respond to the lawsuit on Wednesday morning (October 6).
