AUSTINTOWN – A woman was shot dead outside a Compass West apartment on Friday night, and a man is being held in Mahoning County Jail without bail with aggravated murder, police said.

A police dispatcher at 10:37 p.m. received a call from the woman about an ongoing domestic dispute, and the dispatcher could overhear an argument with a man, said Lt. Tom Collins of the Austintown Police Department . The man and the woman shared a child.

The police dispatcher “heard several gunshots on the phone, then screaming,” Collins said, then the dispatcher realized the woman had been shot. The episode took place outside the 1057 Compass West Drive building.

The first officers arrived and tried to provide emergency care, but she was deceased due to the severity of the injuries and the location of the bullets, Collins said.

The dispatcher had heard six gunshots, he noted.

The name of the victim, 25, will not be released by the county coroner’s office until early this week.

The suspect had left the compound, but a female witness was outside the building receiving “several calls” from her. He is identified by police and prison records as 24-year-old Steve W. Green III. Green was calling the friend’s phone and the police tried to talk to him, Collins said.

Eventually, with the help of his family, Green was convinced to surrender to the police. Austintown police followed him to the police station “and he admitted to shooting,” Collins said.

He was sentenced to prison on Saturday.

The weapon was not found on Friday evening and its caliber at this point is undetermined, the lieutenant said.

A murder also took place at the complex last October. Keylan Davis, 32, has been shot several times, according to the coroner, at 1080 Compass West Drive.

Police said Davis’ shooting happened around 9:50 a.m. and he was shot in the throat. Officers were called after three shots were reported in the building.
