The Filipino senator is unlikely to be able to continue in the ring if he wins the 2022 election.

Manny Pacquiao has announced that he will run for President of the Philippines in 2022, which could mark the end of his boxing career.

Pacquiao last fought in August when he lost to Cuban Yordenis Ugas, and at 42, it was suggested he had at most one more fight before devoting himself full time to Philippine politics, where he is already a senator.

Pacquiao was nominated for president by his faction of PDP-Laban, the other faction of the party nominating Christopher ‘Bong’ Go as the candidate, although current president Rodrigo Duterte is running for vice-president, which could see remain de facto leader if elected.

“I am a fighter, and I will always be a fighter in and out of the ring,” he said at a live broadcast event.

“I accept your nomination as the presidential candidate of the Republic of the Philippines.”

If Pacquiao were to commit full-time to the campaign and then succeed in becoming president, it would almost certainly mean that he would no longer have time to participate in other boxing events, and regardless of the outcome of the campaign. His disappointing performance against Ugas may have convinced him that now is the time to retire.
