Florida medical authorities said they were investigating the death of a 56-year-old doctor two weeks after receiving a Covid-19 vaccine.

Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner is investigating the late January 3 or early January 4 death of Gregory Michael, who received a Covid-19 vaccine on December 19, according to Darren Caprara, the doctor’s director of operations coroner.

The medical examiner is examining the cause of Dr Michael’s death and whether it was caused by or related to the vaccine, Mr Caprara said.

The medical examiner’s office and the Florida Department of Health said they were working with the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC is aware of the death in Florida of an individual who received the Pfizer vaccine about two weeks before he died, a spokesperson for the agency said. An FDA spokeswoman said the agency had no immediate comment.

Dr Michael was a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach. Three days after being vaccinated, he was admitted to hospital, Mr Caprara said.

His wife wrote on Facebook that he died after receiving a vaccine from Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE and due to a condition known as thrombocytopenia. The condition is marked by a shortage of blood platelets which help to stop the bleeding.

Dr Michael’s wife did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment.

Pfizer and BioNTech have said they are investigating the death, but don’t believe there is a direct link to the vaccine.

“This is a very unusual clinical case of severe thrombocytopenia, a condition that decreases the body’s ability to clot blood and stop internal bleeding,” a Pfizer spokesperson said in a statement.

Thrombocytopenia has not been identified as a potential side effect in clinical trials testing the Covid-19 vaccine, and it has not emerged as a problem since health regulators allowed widespread use last month, said the spokesperson for Pfizer.

The Florida Department of Health has been informed that a Miami-Dade County health worker who received the Covid-19 vaccine has died, and immediately referred this information to the CDC for investigation, a spokesperson said. word.

A spokeswoman for Mount Sinai said the hospital could neither confirm nor deny any information about a patient, citing laws and guidelines on patient privacy.

The FDA cleared the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for use on Dec. 11, after it was found to be 95% effective and generally well tolerated in a clinical trial of 44,000 subjects.
