Portland, Oregon (KPTV) – Two years ago this month, Ricky Malone Sr., 65, was shot and killed in North Portland.
“Three in the morning he was canned and three miners came over him and wanted his car,” said Malone’s sister Donnece White. “He was not abandoning his car and he was shot at point blank range with a shotgun.”
White said that every October 14 his family goes to where he was killed and that every year it doesn’t get any easier.
“Every October we go into a little crisis because we know what happened,” she said. “We lost our parents, but it’s so much harder because of the way it happened. My brother was a fun-loving dad and grandfather. He loved life.
White said it happened less than a mile from McCoy Park, where a “March Against Murder” rally was held on Saturday to take a stand against violence in Portland. White shared his brother’s story there.
“I think it’s important for other people to hear my story. So maybe it could hit a bell, a light bulb could go out, ”she said. “So someone else doesn’t end up like my family. (My family) was affected by this.
So far this year, Portland Police have said there have been 66 homicides. The city is on track to break the record number of homicides in a calendar year, set in 1987. In 2021, there were nearly 950 shootings and 50 people died there.
“If you save one person, it’s like saving 10,000,” Lionel Irving said with Love is Stronger. “When a young man dies at age 20, look at his lineage and what it could have been. How many generations have we just lost? We are losing our best and our brightest children. This is the untold part of this story.
“It’s a citywide problem. We’ve been to Gresham, we’ve been to the North East and it’s okay for us to come to North Portland to make sure everyone understands that no matter where you live in Portland, this issue affects you, ”Royal Harris, the organizer of the march against murder rally said.
