American violinist Maria Youdenich won first prize at the 11th Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition, whose final took place in Hanover on October 10. She received € 30,000 following her final performance of Brahms’ Violin Concerto with the NDR Radiophilharmonie conducted by Andrew Manze, as well as the commissioned work To play in the garden by Manfred Trojahn.

Violinists Chiara Sannicandro, Javier Comesaña and Minami Yoshida also participated in the final round. Other prizes were awarded to the four finalists, with each winner receiving € 10,000. Youdenitch also won the prizes for the best performance of the commissioned work (€ 5,000), the Chamber Music Award (€ 3,000), a recording and distribution contract with Warner Classics, music by G. Henle Verlag as well as multiple future concerts.

Spanish violinist Javier Comesaña has secured a three-year loan of a 1765 Giovanni Battista Guadagnini violin from Fritz Behrens Stiftung. German violinist Chiara Sannicandro received the Audience Prize of € 2,000.

The jury was composed of Carolin Widmann, Ana Chumachenco, Suyoen Kim, Christine Schäfer, Zohrab Tadevosyan, Ulf Wallin, Donald Weilerstein, Robert Levin, Eleonore Büning and Andrew Manze

Yudenich’s victory follows her recent success at the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition, which she won in September 2021. She studied at the International Center for Music at Park University, in Kansas City with Ben Sayevich, the Curtis Institute of Music with Pamela Frank and Shmuel Ashkenasi and the New England Conservatory with Miriam Fried. The previous winners of the Joseph Joachim competition are Timothy Chooi, Nemanja Radulovic, Sergey Dogadin, Fumiaki Miura, Dani Kim and Alexandra Conunova.
