Marquez to travel to Qatar for COVID-19 vaccine

On Thursday, MotoGP announced that it had reached an agreement with the Qatari authorities for all the paddock present in the country to be offered the COVID-19 vaccine, following the successful deployment of the region to its population.

The proposed vaccine is the Pfizer vaccine, which requires its two doses to be divided by 19 days.

Marquez will travel to Qatar for the first shot before returning home to continue his training ahead of his return to MotoGP, Motorsport.com has learned.

Most of the MotoGP paddock received the first dose of the vaccine on Friday, although it is understood that Takaaki Nakagami declined the offer.

Most of the Moto2 and Moto3 teams changed their plans to stay in Qatar so that they could receive both doses of the vaccine.

“This is a fantastic opportunity that the Qatari government is offering to the MotoGP community, and the Repsol Honda team is very grateful,” said Honda team boss Alberto Puig.

“We understand that Qatar wants to protect all the people of the world championship and also its people.

“As far as Marc is concerned, he will have to be vaccinated because he was created to fight this virus.”

Marquez was cleared by medics to resume motorcycling as the right arm he broke during last year’s Spanish Grand Prix finally showed significant signs of recovery after a third operation in December.

Honda put Marquez on the provisional entry list for the Qatar GP on March 28, and the Spaniard has not ruled out the possibility of entering the race despite the lack of pre-season testing.

However, there is still some doubt as to whether he will be ready to roll when the season kicks off in just 13 days.

If Marquez couldn’t run in the opening round, HRC test driver Stefan Bradl will likely step in to take his place, as he did from the Czech Republic GP last year.
