A newly opened educational center in the Gobi Desert was created to allow Chinese students and tourists to experience what their life might look like if they had landed on Mars.

Built on the steep and arid terrain of China's northwestern Gansu Province, the "Mars 1 Base" was built by the Chinese company C-SPACE.

The installation was set up while China was developing its national space program, which announced its intention to send a probe to Mars by 2020.
