GAITHERSBURG, Maryland – A Maryland woman has been charged by police with attempting to kill her 3-year-old daughter, and officers responding to a call have reportedly saved the child’s life, authorities said Monday.

The Montgomery County Police Department said in a press release that 28-year-old Anne Catherine Akers is charged with attempted second degree murder, first degree assault and first degree child abuse. Akers is being held without bond and was due to hold a bond review hearing on Monday. We can’t tell if she has a lawyer.

According to the press release, a relative calling 911 on Saturday said they arrived at Akers’ home and saw blood on the floor. When officers arrived they found blood and a pair of scissors and when they located Akers she had a laceration on her neck. A blanket the woman was holding covered her daughter, who police said had a life-threatening neck laceration.

Officers took rescue action on the child before emergency personnel arrived and took Akers to a local hospital with serious injuries. A Maryland State Police helicopter took the child to an area hospital, where medics said had it not been for police action, the 3-year-old’s injuries would have been fatal.
