A coronavirus outbreak in a northern Massachusetts seaside town has reached more than 250 people infected following a July 4 vacation wave.

Local health officials noted 256 confirmed cases linked to a cluster in Provincetown, with 190 infections among state residents, including 109 involving people in surrounding Barnstable County, the rest of the cases among people outside state, according to a statement released Wednesday. More than 3,000 tests have been administered locally since July 1.

The news comes after health officials issued a public health notice on Monday amid 132 confirmed cases linked to the cluster, noting that infections have occurred in both vaccinated and unvaccinated people. The advisory was issued to help contain infections and urge residents to take precautions.

Authorities have advised, regardless of vaccination status, to get tested, practice hand hygiene, stay at home if symptoms of COVID-19 are suspected and hide indoors where the social distancing could not be followed. Residents were also urged to be vaccinated if they had not done so and were warned of close contacts that could spread the viral spread.

The state has administered more than 8.7 million doses, with more than 4.2 million people fully vaccinated, according to the latest available data. Figures suggest Barnstable County claims the highest percentage of individuals with at least one dose statewide at at least 75%.
