BOSTON (CBS) – The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is urging states to start immunizing people 65 years of age and older. “It’s time to move on to the next phase of the immunization campaign,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar.
Azar also said the federal government is distributing the required second dose of vaccine to states.
“It’s obviously a complicated process, but like we’ve said before, vaccines can’t come quickly enough,” Gov. Charlie Baker said.
The governor was asked about the CDC’s recommendation to start expanding vaccine distribution. He said any change in Massachusetts’ schedule would come after receiving advice from the state’s COVID-19 vaccine advisory group.
Currently, Massachusetts is still in the first phase. “I think the recommendations that were made by our group are appropriate and I think people over 75 are early in group two,” Baker said.
On Tuesday, the governor announced that Gillette Stadium will be the first mass vaccine distribution site.

Later this week it will be open to staff administering the vaccine, next week it will be available to first responders and in later phases it will be used for people over 65 and possibly the general public.
In some states, people over 65 are already receiving the vaccine.
James Smith of Shrewsbury winters in Florida. He and his wife received the vaccine last week.
“When the opportunity arises you kind of take advantage of it, so we weren’t really sure we could get it here, but we own a condo so we used that address,” Smith said.
