State health officials on Monday confirmed 1,166 more cases of the coronavirus, bringing the number of active cases to 43,856.
Monday’s cases are based on 29,195 new molecular tests, according to the Department of Public Health.
There have now been 218,329 confirmed cases of the virus since the start of the pandemic.
Authorities also announced 25 other COVID-related deaths, bringing the death toll to 10,512.
The number of Massachusetts residents hospitalized or suspected of COVID-19 has increased to 1,174, including 244 patients in intensive care.
The seven-day positive test average is 3.93%, up from 0.8% in September.
The latest figures come as Moderna announced it would seek emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its prototype vaccine, which clinical trials have shown to be 94% effective.
Moderna’s vaccine, mRNA-1273, is the second to be submitted to the federal agency for emergency use authorization after Pfizer and BioNTech filed two weeks ago. Phase 3 clinical trials of this COVID vaccine found the immune candidate to be 95% effective.
The state will soon be rolling out rapid tests in long-term care facilities, Health and Human Services Secretary Marylou Sudders said last week. The tests, developed by Abbott BinaxNOW, will be available at long-term care facilities across the state, particularly for visitors to the centers, Sudders said.
