State health officials confirmed another 6,887 cases of COVID-19 on New Years Eve, bringing the number of active cases statewide to 80,359.

The seven-day positive test average edged up to 8.60%, the data showed. There are currently 2,271 people hospitalized with the virus or with COVID-like symptoms, including 417 intensive care patients. Currently, 240 patients are on ventilators.

Officials also announced 81 other COVID-related deaths, bringing the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 12,157.

Gov. Charlie Baker said on Wednesday the first phase of vaccine distribution was underway statewide, as officials prepare to administer the vaccines to first responders next week.
