Governor Matt Bevin on Thursday accused a Kentucky teacher of shooting a 7-year-old child.

During a speech to the Rotary Club in Louisville, Bevin apparently spoke of a shootout in Shively on March 12, when a 7-year-old girl was shot dead.

The shooting in the city of Louisville took place around 15:06. At the time, the girl and her 11-year-old brother were at home alone, while their guardian, their uncle, was outside, officials said.

Authorities initially reported that the child had been taken from Shively's apartment to Norton Children's Hospital, where she had remained in critical but stable condition after surgery.

Shively's police said in a March 27 press release that the boy had accidentally shot his sister. The girl was "classified in good condition, transferred to begin her rehabilitation, eating solid foods," the statement said.

The department did not respond to requests for additional information.

Jefferson County Public Schools were closed on the day of the shooting due to the illness of a teacher. JCPS was closed for the fourth time out of six due to sick leave between February 28 and March 14.

According to the district's website, most JCPS elementary schools are closed at 3:45 pm, although it is not clear whether the children attended JCPS.

A spokeswoman for JCPS said Thursday that the police did not usually reveal the identity of the juvenile victims. She did not immediately know if the children involved in the shooting at Shively were JCPS students.

The Democratic Party of Kentucky quickly issued a statement denouncing Bevin's claim.

"Governor Bevin's repeated attacks on teachers are disgusting and unforgivable," party spokesman Marisa McNee said. "He's completely out of control, Kentuckians deserve better than that.

This is not the first time that Bevin has claimed that teachers' demonstrations have led to acts of violence against children.
