Maurice Scott had a shy smile while he was talking about the monuments and museums of his hometown in a video produced at Somerset Prep DC, the chartered school in southeastern Washington, where he was in ninth year.
His brown eyes trained on the camera, the student of the board of honor said that he liked to play basketball, "relax" and laugh.
On Monday, the video aired online, as friends and family mourned for the 15-year-old shot dead in Congress Heights, two blocks from his school.
Somerset's director, Lauren Catalano, said the clip captures Maurice's spirit and personality, whom she describes as a talented athlete and a creative video production student with "the best sense of the word". 39; humor. "
"Maurice's smile has lit up the school, you can not help but smile at seeing his dimples sink," she said in an email.
She added that "the legacy of the young man will continue to live thanks to his twin sister Melissa", who also attends Somerset.
In a letter to Somerset parents on Monday, Catalano said the school was heartbroken by the shooting. She said students would be released from the classroom early Tuesday for the chance to meet with grief counselors.
Police said that no arrests were made during the shooting that occurred on Sunday morning in front of a shopping street at 3500 Block Wheeler Road SE. Two women and one girl were injured.
Semere Abraha, who owns the Holiday Market convenience store on the site, was in the process of storing shelves near the entrance when the shots were fired. Several people rushed inside to take cover, he said.
In the surveillance video footage of the car park, captured by Abraha's security system and seen by the Washington Post, a young man can be seen rushing to the entrance and placing his hand on the door handle. He then falls to the ground, the glass explodes and spreads around him.
The shooter pulled out of the front passenger seat of a car in the parking lot and opened fire with what the police later described as a "rifle or long gun".
Police said she was looking for a light-colored four-door sedan of an older model last seen south on Wheeler Road SE.
Scott was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. Shortly after, the other victims entered the same hospital. All had to survive.
The shootings remained under investigation, the police said.
"If you come to visit, you should visit the White House," says the teenager with a nod.
Maurice adds about himself: "I like to relax. I like to laugh. I like to joke. Be coolin.
Comments posted under the video lament the loss of youth in society due to violence.
In his letter, Catalano wrote: "We must rely on each other and wrap our arms around our precious children to protect them and keep them loved."
A candlelight vigil is scheduled for June 8, she said.
