NEW ORLEANS – Today Mayor Cantrell was joined by Secretary Marcia Fudge, US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, Representative Troy Carter, Congressman American, 2nd Congressional District, Dr. Takeisha Davis, CEO of New Orleans East Hospital and Danielle Willis, CFO of New Orleans East Hospital, to visit New Orleans East Hospital and recognize its success in saving lives while enduring the Hurricane Ida. The event also highlighted the city, state, and US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) partnership that helped New Orleans rebuild after Hurricane Katrina and prioritize to the distribution of vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

HUD has been an important partner in funding the construction of affordable housing in New Orleans and throughout Louisiana and has been instrumental in bringing adequate hospital care to East New Orleans. In 2012, HUD issued a firm Federal Housing Administration (FHA) commitment of over $ 97 million to build a state-of-the-art community hospital that has been hardened to withstand Category 4 winds, tornadoes, flooding and remain operational during a severe hurricane. and its consequences.
The New Orleans East Hospital was built with generators that could run for at least eleven days without refueling. For Hurricane Ida, the hospital operated for 5 days at full capacity without disrupting patient care. The emergency room of this hospital even remained open and received patients who arrived via police units.
The Eastern New Orleans Hospital was also the first in the country to partner with public housing authorities and FHA Low Income Developments to begin COVID awareness vaccinations in mobile units and contributed to the city’s success in prioritizing vaccinations. The Housing Authority of New Orleans led the effort to bring vaccines to the community – helping immunize more than 800 residents in partnership with the New Orleans East Hospital and other health entities.
The development of the New Orleans East Hospital and its essential services is also recognized as a community facility and links healthcare with the need to build more affordable housing throughout the city, especially in New Orleans East.
The Cantrell administration has identified East New Orleans as a great place for homeownership and economic development, understanding that the two work together to build strong communities. In partnership with HUD, the City has invested $ 9.5 million in a second soft down payment since May 2018, with 60% of the funding used to help more than 100 homeowners in East New Orleans.
An additional $ 7.6 million is expected to be disbursed over the next 18 months, at least half of which will be used in New Orleans East. Several multi-family developments have been built in partnership with HUD, and two are under construction in New Orleans East. Lake Forest Manor, a run-down old facility currently under construction, is 85 percent complete. The Reveal, a new construction project estimated to be completed in October 2021, is a $ 1.4 million investment by the City. The total cost of developing the site is $ 40 million, which will bring 150 affordable units online. This project includes a business incubator and will provide a program to bring tenants into home ownership.
The New Orleans East Hospital is a $ 1.5 million investment using community development grants to produce 200 senior units that are expected to go live in December 2021. The project has a total development cost of $ 32 million. dollars.
