Orange County, Florida Mayor Jerry Demings has declared a local state of emergency by executive order following the increase in COVID-19 cases.
At a July 28 press conference, Demings doubled down on his demand that all residents and visitors wear masks indoors, regardless of their immunization status. He also still urges local businesses to adopt mandates requiring indoor face masks and vaccines for employees.
Currently, 62.34% of Orange County residents have received a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Demings said he believed if indoor masking was instituted and vaccination rates increased, it would help control the spread of COVID-19 in the community. He recently announced that the county is seeing 1,000 new cases per day.
Demings also said local hospitals said they were approaching a crisis as hospitalizations increased.
Demings is unable to set a county-wide mask mandate due to Gov. DeSantis’ legislation.
Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort are both in Orange County. At present, neither resort has changed their current mask policies, which require only unvaccinated clients to wear masks indoors.
