Terry McAuliffe, the Democratic candidate for governor of Virginia, lectured Anita Blanton, an African-American presenter for WAVY News 10, in an interview that aired Wednesday night, telling Blanton that the discussion of critical theory of the breed in public schools is “racist, that’s a dog whistle.”
Blanton first asked McAuliffe how he defined critical race theory. He responded by stating that “I am answering this question very clearly. It’s not taught in Virginia, it’s never been taught in Virginia. And as I have often said: it’s a whistle. It’s racial, it’s divisive, and it’s used by Glenn Youngkin and others – it’s the same with Trump and the Border Wall – to divide people.
When Blanton pushed him on his definition of the term, however – and it would take a definition to prove it’s not taught in the state – McAuliffe again refused to provide one, repeating that it is not relevant because it is not taught.
Blanton continued to search for a definition at which point McAuliffe explained to him “this is racist, this is a whistle”.
“But if we don’t have a definition, how can we tell [discussion of critical race theory in the context of public schools] is racist? asked an exasperated Blanton.
Originally confined to the realm of higher education, Critical Race Theory, which views all of American society as a race for power between races, has increasingly been incorporated into K-12 education in the past. over the past year.
Forty-seven percent of Virginians would support a legal ban on critical race theory in public schools, while 36 percent would oppose such a policy.
McAuliffe’s comments on Critical Race Theory come in the context of his stated view that he “doesn’t think parents should tell schools what they should be teaching.” Polls show that by a nineteen point margin, Virginians believe parents should have more control over classroom curricula than school boards.
