LAKE COUNTY, Calif .– A forecast of gusty northerly winds coupled with low humidity prompted the National Weather Service to issue a fire weather watch for Lake and many other counties in the region for Monday and Tuesday.
The day before, issued Friday, will be in effect from Monday at 2 a.m. until Tuesday at 5 p.m., the national weather service said.
A fire weather watch means critical fire weather conditions are forecast, the agency reported.
The National Weather Service said gusty northerly winds will increase throughout Monday following a cold, dry front, with intensifying winds and poor moisture recovery over the ridges. from eastern Lake County Sunday evening.
Forecasters said the strongest winds would be over exposed high terrain and valleys trending north to south on Monday afternoon and evening.
A minimum humidity of 15 to 25% is expected on Monday; overnight recoveries could range from 25 to 50% and 60 to 70% in sheltered areas like valleys, the National Weather Service said.
During weather monitoring for fires, northerly winds are expected to range from 15 to 25 miles per hour, with gusts of 30 to 40 miles per hour over exposed ridges.
Winds are expected to ease and humidity to recover on Tuesday morning, but forecasts indicate that winds will remain strong over the mountain ridges of Lake County with poor recoveries. These windy conditions will continue through Tuesday afternoon and evening.
The National Weather Service said it is these windy conditions combined with low humidity that could lead to critical fire conditions.
Before the weather watch for the fires, forecasts predicted the potential for scattered showers overnight Friday and through early Saturday.
The long-term forecast also contains the potential for very light rain in the county on Wednesday.
Over the coming week, forecasts call for daytime temperatures to range from low 60s at the start of the week to highs 70 by the end of next week.
Night conditions are forecast for the next few days to go from a maximum of 30s to a minimum of 40s.
