GOP House Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., Has expressed “concerns” about Representative Liz Cheney’s role in leadership and said the Wyoming Republican should respond to his GOP colleagues for having voted to impeach former President Trump.
In a new interview with Greta Van Susteren due to air on Sunday, McCarthy said Cheney, the No. 3 House Republican, had not told him about his vote to impeach Trump.
“Look, I support her, but I also have concerns,” McCarthy told Gray Television’s “Full Court Press with Greta Van Susteren”. “She took a stand as member # 3 in conference, she never told me in advance.”

Cheney was one of 10 Republicans to vote to impeach Trump on “incitement to insurgency” for his role in inciting the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill. It has since attracted a main challenger to Wyoming.

“We know it’s going to become a difficulty,” McCarthy said of Cheney’s decision. “She may have a difference of opinion, but the only thing if we want to run the conference, we should work together on this conference as a whole because we are representative of this conference. So I support her, but I think that she has a lot of questions to answer at the conference. “
Cheney took a decisive stand after the January 6 riot that left five people dead, including a Capitol Hill cop, that the attack could not have happened without Trump. She resisted all calls to resign and called the impeachment a vote of conscience.

“The President of the United States called this crowd, gathered the crowd and lit the flame of this attack,” Cheney said, explaining his vote at the time. “All that followed was his doing.”
McCarthy took a different approach. On the day of the impeachment vote, McCarthy gave a speech in which he would support censorship of the president.
“The president bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by Mafia rioters,” McCarthy said. “He should have immediately denounced the crowd when he saw what was going on. These facts require immediate action from President Trump.”

At a press conference Thursday, however, McCarthy appeared to make a distinction when asked if Trump provoked the attack, as GOP leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Said.
“I don’t think he provoked it if you listen to what he said at the rally,” McCarthy said at a press conference.

During the interview with Van Susteren, she asked why McCarthy had changed his stance on Trump’s responsibility. McCarthy denied any about-face.
“No, I haven’t changed in that,” McCarthy said.
“I thought the president had some responsibility for the response. If you listen to what the president said at the rally, he said, ‘Demonstrate peacefully.’ And then I had a question later for find out if he instigated them. I also think everyone across the country has a responsibility. “
McCarthy’s comments of “everyone” bearing some responsibility for the riot were quickly denounced on social media, including by Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., Who said: “McCarthy has no principle, except ambition ”.
McCarthy went on to speak of lowering the temperature of political discourse in the country in general and calling for the left’s resistance movement against Trump.

“I think it’s better, especially with what we’ve been through with the Democrats, let’s not lower ourselves to their level,” McCarthy said. “Let us believe in the rule of law. And if President Biden does something that is up to the task of impeachment, then we come up with articles of impeachment.”
