McDONALD – The Blue Devils did a quick job at Waterloo on Tuesday with a straight set winner, 25-11, 25-11, 25-12.
This is only the third year of the volleyball program, but the Blue Devils improved their record to 4-1 and 2-1 in the MVAC, having recorded an 8-15 record in 2019 and finished 12-12 in the last season.
McDonald’s also has a new coach in Mike Klockner.
“There is a lot of learning involved,” he said. “But, I am surrounded by good coaches. I have been an assistant for the past two years here. The girls worked hard and made my job a lot easier. McDonald’s still have great athletes. They play other sports. They are competitors. They picked up the game very quickly.
They certainly have. The Blue Devils have three seniors with Brielle Robinson, Matti Srock and Mikki Williams on the roster. Seniors lead a talented group of subclasses.
“The seniors are doing a great job,” Klockner said. “They’ve been there from the start. They are leaders.
Another leader is junior Maria Rasile. Rasile led McDonald’s with 16 assists on Tuesday night as the Devils passed Waterloo.
“Our team played really well,” said Rasile. “Sometimes we slow down in the third game. But, we kept our energy. Everyone did what they were supposed to do.
The only thing that could prevent McDonald’s from continuing to score was when play was interrupted for a while in the third set because the ball got stuck in the net hanging from the rafters.
Rasile served an ace, and sophomore Megan Klockner did too, making it 12-5 in the third.
Megan Klockner recorded 11 serve points, a game-high, as well as 12 assists and 3 assists.
“We kept pushing,” she said. “We have played our game. We want to keep winning and improving. Hopefully by the end of the season we can have a race in the tournament. ”
Sophomore Sheryaliz Bonilla had six digs and rookie Gianna Costantino led the way with 10 kills.
“They are two exceptional volleyball players,” said Coach Klockner. “They are fun to train and they understand the game. Gianna is really advanced to be just a first year. We are really lucky to have it.
Rasile ended the match by hitting the ball over the net, just in the right place, where no one could reach it.
“We are counting on our serve to get a quick jump over the teams,” said coach Klockner. “Megan Klockner and Maria Rasile are our passers. They always set the tone for everyone on the pitch. They communicate with the rest of the team by calling hits. It’s great to have two passers, on the same team, of this caliber. We are very lucky with all the talent that we have here.
