The Australian approach to the McDonald’s brand has many advantages. The UA’s nickname for the fast food chain, “Maccasis extremely fun to say. The local menu features cheesecakes, toast, and macaroon cookies. And now Maccas is apparently making a PlayStation 5 controller that we probably should hate but can’t. This is a heavily branded advertisement for burgers, it’s a surprisingly eye-catching and contrasting take on McDonald’s bright red, clean white, and yellow fries.
Yes, part of it is a weird, soulless marketing campaign designed to make unhealthy food endearing, but it’s also just a well-designed custom gamepad. And because this is an exclusive 50th anniversary gift for the Australian branch, most of us will never be able to get one.
If you live in Australia, however, the controller would be given away during a series of Twitch streams that will run throughout the first week of August.
Australian gaming site Press Start has revealed the announced giveaway, but McDonald’s has yet to officially confirm it. Even so, it seems legitimate: CNET contacted one of the participating Twitch streamers and a chat moderator told them that the ad was “not supposed to be published until next week.” The streamer quickly mentioned on streaming that they couldn’t talk about it, before moving on to another topic.
If you are able to get one, please do not eat McDonald’s while you are using it. Nobody likes a fat controller.
