Statewide Iowa – (RI) – The Ministry of Public Health of Iowa has confirmed a case of measles in Iowa. Dr. Caitlin Pedati, medical director of the department, says that data protection laws prevent them from disclosing detailed information, but she can give some details.
Dr. Pedati stated that they had acted quickly so that this case would not spread.
This is the first case of measles in Iowa since 2011. Pedati said he was not worried that the disease would turn into a bigger epidemic.
She says measles can spread very quickly among those who have not been vaccinated.
Measles vaccines are given to children aged 12 to 15 months. A second booster is given between four and six years old and Pedati says that the vaccine is effective at 94% after the first cycle and 97% after the second cycle. She says the C-D-C recommended that the second vaccination be given in 1989.
The Centers for Disease Control reports that from January 1 to April 11, 2019, 555 individual cases of measles were confirmed in 20 states. This is the second largest number of cases reported in the United States since the elimination of the disease in 2000. Other states reporting measles cases are as follows: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut , Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Texas and Washington.
