Measles outbreak: Vancouver epidemic rises to 77 confirmed cases

The Clark County Public Health Department announced Wednesday that another case of measles linked to an outbreak in the Vancouver area had been diagnosed. The total number of people diagnosed in Oregon and Washington due to the outbreak that has been reported since January 1 is now 77.

According to health officials, three other people in Oregon contracted measles not related to the epidemic.

Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads in the air and can persist for up to two hours in a confined space. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nine out of 10 unvaccinated people exposed to the virus will contract it. One in two people die in 1,000 people with measles.

The vast majority of people affected by the current epidemic have not been vaccinated against the virus. Several received one dose of the vaccine, 93% effective.

Two doses are 97% effective and public health officials in Washington recommend that all unvaccinated or single-dose recipients receive both injections to prevent measles. The vaccine can reduce the risk of infection if it is obtained within 72 hours of exposure to the virus.

To help prevent the spread of the disease, health officials are asking people who think they have measles to call their doctor or health care provider before going to the hospital or doctor's office.

Here are the latest figures from measles cases in Oregon and Washington State confirmed by Clark County Public Health and the Oregon Health Authority, as well as areas where people may have been exposed to the virus and resources to call.

Total number of measles cases confirmed since January 1, 2019 in Oregon and Washington (from 13/03/2019): 80
