LAKEWOOD – Measles has returned to Ocean County with a confirmed case and possible exposure to others.
The state Department of Health has warned of the risk of exposure of an individual with measles to the Health, Medical and Dental Education Center (CHEMED) at 1771 Madison Ave. between 13h45 and 18h Wednesday. The ministry did not specify where the person lives.
Ocean County has been the focus of distinct outbreaks in the fall and spring. The most recent outbreak was declared complete on May 16th.
Anyone exposed to CHEMED is at risk if they have not been vaccinated or have not had measles. Potentially exposed people, if infected, could develop symptoms as late as July 31st.
Health officials have recommended that anyone at the health center during these hours contact a health care provider. We also suggest you call your provider first so you do not potentially expose others.
According to the CDC, after being declared eliminated in the United States in 2000, measles returned with 1,109 cases reported in 28 states. This is the largest number of cases since 1992.
Epidemics in the state of New York are still active with 280 confirmed cases in Rockland County and 620 cases in Brooklyn and Queens since 2018.
Symptoms of measles include rash, high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. Measles can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis (swelling of the brain). In pregnant women, measles can lead to miscarriage, premature birth or low birth weight.
