OGDEN – Even before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, local doctors wanted to plan a big medical conference focused on infectious disease.
But then the virus struck – and the Ogden Surgical-Medical Society conference, which usually took place in May, had to be postponed.
Next week, with the conference resuming, the theme will be none other than infectious diseases, along with other medical issues.
The conference will be held October 6-8 at the Eccles Conference Center in Ogden.
“The conference provides up-to-date and current information in medicine and healthcare and in the era of the global pandemic, there are interesting topics regarding the current pandemic,” said Dr Petronella Adomako, medical specialist. infectious diseases at McKay-Dee Hospital and president of the Ogden Surgical and Medical Society.
“While one might think that this is only for healthcare providers, there are discussions geared towards the general public. We know that it is taking place during a pandemic but all the necessary precautions are taken; social distancing, provision of adequate supplies and masking. “
Lectures given in the main ballroom of the conference center will also be webcast live for anyone wishing to attend virtually.
“This is the first year that we will be streaming the conference and it’s pretty exciting because anyone can go to the website and click on the link and watch for free,” said Teresa Puskedra, Executive Director of the Ogden Surgical-Medical Society. “But the public is also welcome to attend the conference in person. It’s free unless they want to join us for lunch or dinner.
The cost of lunch is $ 20 and dinner will be $ 40, according to Puskedra.
“On Wednesday October 6, the Society is hosting a ‘Girls’ Dinner’ with lectures from Dr. Sarah Berga, Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University of Buffalo, New York,” said Dr Douglas Anderson, ear, nose and throat specialist at the Ogden Clinic. “The first lecture is entitled ‘Are hormones neuroprotective? Saving Grandma’s Brain ‘at 6.30 p.m. and the second lecture at 7.30 p.m. titled’ Stress, Emotional Eating and Reproductive Functions’.
Dr Leisha Nolen, epidemiologist with the Utah Department of Health, will speak both about the Department of Health’s COVID-19 response and the reluctance to vaccinate. National historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Oshinsky will discuss the history of medicine with infectious diseases.
“The Current Perspective on AIDS and HIV Infection: How Far Have We Gotten It,” will be presented by Dr. Kristen Ries and “Polio: An American History,” by Oshinsky, are both in the spotlight. agenda.
Dr RJ Bunnell, hospitalist at McKay-Dee Hospital, will speak about COVID-19 on the front line. Bunnell visited New York during the peak of the pandemic and will also speak about his experience in that arena.
“It will be a very informative conference and we welcome anyone interested in attending and learning more about these topics,” said Puskedra.
