Medical issue will prevent Alabama wide receiver from coming out in 2021

Alabama wide receiver Xavier Williams will not play in 2021 due to “medical issues,” coach Nick Saban revealed Wednesday night.

Williams, who was entering his fourth season with the Tide, was taken off the roster ahead of fall camp.

“Without saying what, he won’t be playing medically this year,” Saban said.

Williams was a four-star Florida rookie in 2018 who didn’t spend much time on offense in his first three seasons with the Tide. His playing time increased towards the end of last season, and he recorded one catch in each of the last three games against Florida, Notre Dame and Ohio State – the only three catches in his college career.

The playing time he would have received in 2021 was uncertain after Alabama added Ohio State transfer Jameson Williams during the offseason, giving Tide a speed threat to team up with John Metchie and Slade Bolden.

Also on Wednesday, Saban revealed that Jahleel Billingsley’s brief absence from training was linked to COVID-19 protocols. Saban said on Sunday that Billingsley was not training, although he returned on Monday.

“He has to go up, sort of, the depth chart because he ran out a bit of time,” added Saban.

Journalists did not have access to Wednesday’s training because it took place indoors.
