Across two District games, the Titans appear to be unstoppable with the best offense and defense in the league.
Memorial (4-1, 2-0 in District 9-5A Division I) outscored their opponents in District 67-0. This week, the Titans host the Galveston Ball at Memorial Stadium, which kicks off Friday at 7 p.m.
Memorial’s defense is yet to allow a point in the district competition, but Memorial head coach Brian Morgan said the team had not focused on keeping teams without goal as much as they just wanted to win games.
“We haven’t talked about it, but nobody wants to be the one who shits and be the only person to give up a point,” he said with a laugh. “They play at a very high level and run towards the ball. Even other teams play here and there, someone crushes them and rolls them down the length of the pitch.
On the other side of the ball, Memorial’s offense is overwhelming at 511 yards per game. No one else in the district has hit the 400 mark.
The offense begins with quarterback Jah’mar Sanders, who leads the league in passing and running with nearly 2,000 total yards of attack in the first five games. Sanders also counts for 20 touchdowns.
“It’s good to move the ball around and score points,” Morgan said. “More than anything, we are able to spin the ball. It helps the defense. We can take a lead in the second half and really shorten the game. Most importantly, we are doing it right. It is more important not to lose the game than to win it. We don’t have a lot of pre-snap penalties and personal fouls. We don’t give up a lot of big games on special teams. If you don’t do these things, you can win a lot of matches.
Morgan said Ball uses multiple offensive formations to give teams different looks.
“The quarterback can throw it a bit,” Morgan said. “The quarterback is athletic. They have talented guys and the pieces to do really good things on offense. Our defense will have to be prepared.
Morgan referred to last year when Ball played against Memorial in a 35-21 win for the Titans.
“They gave us everything we could manage for about three quarters of the last year,” he said. “We can expect the same this year.
Memorial has the three best receivers in the district in Ilijah Williams, Adrian Hayward and Kelby Blanchette. Williams has 509 yards and five touchdowns. Willams and Blanchette lead the district in yards per reception.
Ball is third in total defense, allowing just 214 yards per game. Galveston Ball just lost 14-7 to Beaumont United.
It’s Homecoming Week for the Titans. Morgan said the team would like to play in front of fans who might not come out otherwise.
“It should be a good little crowd,” he said. “I pester our guys to play a level game. Let’s not be too high or too low. We want to warm up and prepare in the same way.
