Subsidizing Prostate Cancer Treatment Could Save Many Lives
Cancer Support Network of Ghana vice president Eric Odei Brobbey has advised men over 40 to take prostate cancer screening seriously, as the disease usually shows symptoms after it has advanced.
“Prostate cancer is such that when the symptoms start to appear, it means the disease has already progressed. That’s why we encourage regular screening, especially if you are over 40 or have a strong family history of any type of cancer. “
“Prostate cancer is curable and early detection saves lives, so let’s make sure we make screening a priority,” he said.
Mr Brobbey, who spoke to the Ghanaian Times yesterday, said that every year around 219,000 people are diagnosed with prostate cancer in Ghana, adding that more awareness is needed to save the day.
He also expressed concern about cancer patients who visited unapproved treatment centers, especially herbal facilities for solutions to their ailments, saying such a practice only made it worse. the problem.
He said unapproved cancer treatment was a waste of time and money and encouraged people with the disease to follow approved treatment plans prescribed by healthcare professionals.
Addressing the high cost of cancer treatment in the country, Brobbey said many prostate cancer patients have dropped out of treatment due to financial constraints and called on the government to at least subsidize the cost of treatment of the disease, taking into account the number of diagnoses.
“Like all other cancers, treating prostate cancer is very expensive and that’s one of the reasons some people drop out of treatment while others don’t even get the money to start.”
“Chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy have very high costs, so if there can be some form of support from government and business, many lives will be saved and we will not continue to lose men in their productive age. because of prostate cancer like it’s happening now, “he said.
He praised the government, however, for subsidizing breast cancer treatment in the country, saying the move had saved the lives of thousands of Ghanaians and hoped the same intervention would be directed at treating prostate cancer.
The Cancer Support Network of Ghana, he said, also played various roles in supporting cancer patients across the country, ensuring that his organization would continue to provide financial and psychological support to people with the disease. .
In addition, Mr Brobbey reiterated that cancer is a curable disease, especially when caught early, so members of the public should not wait until it is too late before going for medical exams. .
