The Mercedes EQS is a car that starts at $ 102,310 here in the US, and the one who boasts a 478 mile WLPT range, that’s what they use in Europe. In the United States, however, the range is tested by the EPA, and this usually results in a lower number. For the EQS, this came out at 350 miles.
It is according to Green Car Reports, which says a range of 350 miles is for the single-engine version, called the EQS 450; the twin-engine version, the EQS 580, offers a range of 340 miles.
It’s fair to say that a lot of people thought the EPA range for the EQS would be closer to 400 miles, and also closer to that of, say, the Tesla Model S Plaid, which Tesla says gets 396 miles. Still, 350 miles is respectable, at least for normal people; it’s also better than the 348 miles of the Model S Plaid gets with 21 inch tires.
Then there is the Lucid Air, which gets an incredible range estimated at 520 miles by the EPA and starts at $ 77,400. And there’s the Porsche Taycan, which starts at $ 82,700 and gets 225 miles for the base model, and also the Audi E-Tron GT, which starts at $ 100,945 and has a range of 238 miles.
There are enough in this segment now, then, that buyers will have choices to make; I guess most of them will go for whatever luxury brand they already prefer. Lucid will probably be the most interesting, anyway, as they don’t have a track record and also have the car with the most range and miles. For years we have talked about beach anxiety and the sensitivity of electric car buyers to that, and also whether it is even a thing at all. Well, now we more or less have the cars to find out.
