Mesut Ozil has said Arsenal fans will “stay in my heart forever” as he finally completes his move to Fenerbahce.

The midfielder ended his Gunners nightmare on Sunday after being frozen for months under boss Mikel Arteta.

Ozil has long divided opinions among Arsenal fans about his contribution to the club in recent years, but he leaves only with fond memories.

“I want to thank the club for this incredible journey over the past seven and a half years,” he said in his farewell message on the official Arsenal website.

“The support I have felt from the team and the fans during my time here has been truly amazing and I will always be grateful.

“Together, we won trophies for the first time in years and created memories that will last a lifetime.

“The Arsenal fans will remain in my heart forever.”

Ozil struck a deal with Arsenal to mutually terminate their £ 350,000-per-week contract, which had six months to go.

The 32-year-old wasn’t likely to play another role in Arsenal’s season, however, given he wasn’t even listed with their 25-man Premier League squad.

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners have been deprived of title glory for some time now – but things could change as a new Arsenal side chart the course for success.

New signings Gabriel Magalhaes and Thomas Partey have taken over after their summer arrivals, and the new-look Gunners are looking for a top-four spot and Europa League glory this quarter.

Mesut Ozil’s situation continues to remain in the background and there is a lot going on in North London to watch.

Ozil added: “I want to thank [Arsenal technical director] Edu Gaspar for helping deliver a professional and dignified solution over the past few days, and I wish all club members the best in their attempt to continue to bring Arsenal back to the top, where we belong. “

His arrival in Fenerbahce has already been met with a lot of fury in Turkey, although the club president has set up a fundraiser so fans can donate to help pay Ozil’s salary.

Ozil had to undergo a huge pay cut to join the Super Lig club he supported as a child, but agreed to the terms of a deal worth £ 13million on the entire contract.

Although many see Ozil as a hero at Arsenal, he leaves with a lingering feeling that he could have done more.

He wrote in a separate message on his Twitter account that he had “no regrets” and that he “had no hard feelings” despite his fallout with boss Arteta.

Mikel Arteta said: “Mesut’s achievements at Arsenal are undisputed. It has been a privilege to play alongside him and, more recently, to coach him.

“His creativity and vision led to many goals during his time in Arsenal jersey.

“Mesut has been at the heart of many great moments for this club over the years, including those three FA Cup final wins.

“These successes will always be a part of our history. We thank Mesut and wish him good luck with Fenerbahce.”
