Meteor illuminates the night sky north of Florida

"Tonight, Youngstown has captured a strange light falling from the sky!" Said Eric Shultz, who captured the phenomenon on his camera at the door, at his home in the state panhandle.

"Dude, did you see that ?!", exclaimed someone in this video shot on Jeffrey Cardona's control camera in Jacksonville.

It turns out that the light was from a meteor, according to the National Meteorological Service. His flash was captured by the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM), a satellite that takes hundreds of images every second and traces the trajectories of storms.

"Meteors arriving in the Earth's atmosphere happen quite often but we do not always see them," said CNN meteorologist Haley Brink. "Nowadays, we have so many satellites in the space and cameras in the field that these events are becoming more visible to the general public."

Meteor observations have been reported in northern Florida.

"Tonight I was going home and I saw something quite crazy," said a YouTube user in Gainesville. "Fortunately, my dashboard camera caught it."

It is not clear whether the meteor hit the Earth or burned in space.

The National Weather Service said it had heard unconfirmed reports that the meteor would have landed near Perry, Florida, 55 km southeast of Tallahassee.

If anyone thinks he or she has found pieces of the meteor, scientists will have to perform tests to determine whether it is actually a space rock.
