South Texas was treated to a breathtaking cosmic spectacle Thursday night when a meteor lit up the sky, videos.
Yardage captured by a Brownsville meteorologist shows the fireball trail across the night sky before it appears to burn in one last giant flash.
The shooting star was part of the Leonid meteor shower, according to the Brownsville National Weather Service.
The celestial spectacle occurs each November when the planet orbits in a “stream of small icy debris left behind by comet Tempel-Tuttle as it moves around the sun,” NASA explained.
The NWS said on twitter no damage was reported and the meteor likely burned in the atmosphere.
Earlier this month, astronomers in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey were treated to their own “fireball event.”
Other meteor showers expected this year include the Geminids and Ursids – both expected in December.
