Meteor rocked buildings as it exploded over Vermont: NASA

A meteor exploded over northern Vermont on Sunday evening – shaking buildings with an energy release equivalent to 440 pounds of TNT, officials said.

The fireball was spotted by hundreds of witnesses as it roamed the atmosphere at a speed of 42,000 miles per hour, NASA said in a Facebook post.

The space rock was first seen about 52 miles above the Mount Mansfield State Forest before burning over Orleans County about 33 miles in the sky.

“The space rock violently fragmented, producing a pressure wave that shook the buildings and generated the sound heard by those who were near the path,” NASA said in its Facebook post.

“A nice little fireworks display, courtesy of Mother Nature,” the agency said.

An observer told WPTZ he did not hear the sound of the fireball as it passed.

“There was no sound at all,” Al Gregoritsch said on the exit. “I was very excited to see him. It is a phenomenon that I will never forget.
