A bright meteor lighted the sky early Thursday morning, reports of Alabama sightings reported to the Carolinas.

The American Meteor Society has received reports of 500 people from eight states reporting a slow and bright fireball around 6:50 am on Thursday. Most of the reports came from North and South Carolina, but residents of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia also reported seeing the fireball from this morning.

According to the AMS, the trajectory of the meteor went from west to east, ending its flight at Ivanhoe, North Carolina.

Meteors are fragments of space rocks that enter the Earth's atmosphere, where they burn, creating a trail of light.

The rise in meteors occurs before the Lyrid meteor shower, which is expected to peak on April 21 and 22.

The last meteor comes after several recent reports of fireballs in the southeast.
