Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard threw another paddock session on Friday afternoon at Citi Field, as he races against the clock to try to come back before the end of the season over the next three weeks.
Syndergaard began a rehab mission with High-A Brooklyn on August 26. And although it was due to make another appearance on August 29, COVID got in its way.
While the Mets have still not given a date for Syndergaard to return to live games in the minors, the right-hander is progressing well and is confident he will be back in the major leagues this season.
“I think I should have enough time. I’m pretty optimistic about it, ”Syndergaard said The New York Post at Engine 325, Scale 163 at Woodside Friday.
Syndergaard and his teammate Rich Hill visited firefighters earlier today as the 20th anniversary of September 11 approaches.
With little time in the season, when Syndergaard returns, it will be as a reliever. And as the 29-year-old revealed after his first appearance in rehab, he won’t be throwing his slider or curveball because it puts too much pressure on his elbow, which had surgery on Tommy John in March 2020.
Either way, with his contract set to expire at the end of the year, he’s determined to return to the mound to help his team this season, given the time he’s spent rehabilitating.
“Not only that, but just it’s been two years since I played in Major League Baseball, it’s more like an individual reward to me for all the hard work and it’s a bonus if I can go there and hopefully help the Mets win something meaningful ball games, “Syndergaard said.” I think it’s really important for the future of my career… But I’ve been in rehabilitation since then. two years old and I wish I had something to show to reward me for this trip.
Nimmo update
Brandon Nimmo (hamstring) is already working at 75%, according to Mets manager Luis Rojas.
Nimmo tensed his hamstrings against the Nationals on September 4, and Rojas appeared to be ahead of his schedule.
The Mets are hopeful that Nimmo can return this season, although there are only 21 games left on the calendar.
Nido begins a rehabilitation mission
Mets wide receiver Tomas Nido will begin his rehabilitation mission with Triple-A Syracuse on Friday night.
Nido has suffered two separate runs on the injured list since August 16 due to a sprained left thumb.
According to manager Luis Rojas, the pain has subsided and Nido will join the team after a few rehabilitation matches.
