Jason Vargas presented his best game in the Mets uniform, launching a five-game shutout, while Robinson Cano left the game early in the Mets 7-0 win over the Giants on Wednesday. >> Box score
Five things to know about Wednesday's game
1) Vargas had his second brilliant start to the Mets on Wednesday. After having played only seven heats once in 2018, Vargas has now achieved this feat in each of his last two starts. The southpaw started a five-hit shutout, allowing a single runner to pass the first goal while eliminating eight hitters. He quickly becomes the most consistent coach of the Mets rotation.
2) Cano returns to programming on Wednesday, but it does not go as planned. After being engaged in a double game to end the third inning (and limping until the first start), Cano was then removed from play after the fourth inning. Adeiny Hechavarria replaced Cano in the formation, and Hechavarria would go to homer in the seventh inning.
3) Jeff McNeil did a great job putting the table for the Mets out of the starting spot. He went 3 to 5 with a point scored on Wednesday, raising his batting average to 337 on the season.
4) Pete Alonso He spent a quiet night in front of the Mets, but he had a very good defensive night. On three occasions, Alonso concocted a big scoop on first base to prevent his opponents from making mistakes.
5) The Mets launched three home homers on Wednesday night. Hechavarria, Michael Conforto, and Amed Rosario everything went to the bottom of the victory. The Mets have now dominated in 12 consecutive games at Citi Field.
