Streets in the area were closed to traffic for a few hours while emergency personnel worked at the scene.

There had been comments on social media about the possible drug-related cause. However, police said the fire did not appear to have been the result of criminal activity.

“The house is known to us,” said Medford Police Lt. Mike Budreau.

There was no indication that the fire resulted from the operation of a drug lab or the production of butane honey oil, for example, Budreau also said.

There have been other fires in the past that started because of such illegal activities, he said.

Butane Honey Oil – also known as Butane Hash Oil – is created from marijuana using butane as a soaking solvent. It is then used by ingestion, smoke or vaporization, the Fire and Burn Foundation explained on its website fireandburn.org.

Budreau pointed out that the fire department is the primary body investigating the fire.

His cause remains under investigation by the MFD.
