Miami’s football game at Virginia Tech was nearly canceled on Saturday with 13 hurricanes due to COVID-19.

The Miami soccer team missed 13 players in its 25-24 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday. Miami hardly played because of the potential of not being able to compete in multiple groups of positions. The Hurricanes were missing four players each on the offensive and defensive lines plus three starters in total.

Starters left guard Jakai Clark, defensive tackle Jared Harrison-Hunte and linebacker Zach McCloud were all eliminated against Virginia Tech. Ten non-starters were unavailable due to unspecified COVID-related issues, eligibility or injuries. Speaking in the post-game, Manny Diaz praised his team for wanting to play.

Harrison-Hunte was leading the Miami soccer team with three sacks coming into the game on Saturday. Senior Jon Ford, whom Harrison-Hunte replaced as a starter for North Carolina State, returned to the first team on Saturday. Ford had the best game of his career in Miami with six tackles. Sam Brooks played very well as a replacement for McCloud.

Brooks finished with seven tackles, one tackle for a loss and one sack in the second start of his career in Miami. Ousmane Traoré replaced Clark on the offensive line. Miami’s defensive line was decimated by injuries with four players in addition to Harrison-Hunte. Manny Diaz spoke about the thought process before Saturday.

“We were on the brink… The attitude of the players that I thought was the most revealing. They wanted to play and we were about to find out if we could even function as a team… Every time the decision is made when you get your last ACC test.

There’s always a scenario on this test that you couldn’t play a game … it’s really the last hurdle to get you here, but then you go back.

This is the test from the day before the game, so I think those are really the two big moments where it’s like, OK, here is where we are, and who else can we lose and still find a way to play games?

Coming out of Blackburg with a victory is a credit to all of the Miami coaching staff. Jaelan Phillips is set to win his second ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week award. Phillips finished with eight tackles, three TFLs and two sacks. The Miami defense dominated in the fourth quarter for the second straight game.

After allowing six total yards and three runs in the fourth quarter against North Carolina State, Miami held Virginia Tech for 61 yards and no runs. The victory was a team effort on Saturday with big offensive and defensive plays in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. Miami is due to play at Georgia Tech next Saturday.
