FORT WORTH, Texas – A couple from Fort Worth, Texas, died as a result of a mysterious illness while on vacation.

Michelle and David Paul married a few years ago. Two weeks ago, the couple let David's daughter from a previous relationship, her 2-year-old son and her dog Zooey, for the trip of their life to Fiji – unaware that they would leave their young family permanently.

"Anything can happen," said Tracey Calanog, the couple's sister-in-law through her husband, Michelle's brother.

Calanog said relatives had received the call the day before the couple's return to Fort Worth.

"They knew something was going on in their bodies and were able to get to the hospital," she told KVUE.

The family says that the first sign is a type of virus powerful enough to weaken two young and healthy people.

They say that Michelle died first, then David, a veteran of the Air Force, before being flown to Australia for treatment. Their exact cause of death is still a mystery.

KVUE has maintained with the US Embassy in Fiji, which declined to comment on the Paul's case in particular. The US Embassy, however, said the Fijian government had warned of a dangerous flu season in the southern hemisphere.

The couple's children stayed with their families, but we do not know where their dog is. The Pauls embarked, but did not tell anyone where she had been boarded.

"We literally called places on hope and prayer," said Calanog.

A local animal lover community helped track down Zooey and put her back in the arms of her bereaved family.

"We know that Michelle and David are with us at Zooey," said Calanog.
