Some major changes are coming to the way Michigan handles suspended driver’s licenses.
A new set of bills came into effect on Friday that will ensure that the state no longer suspends driver’s licenses for offenses that do not impact driver safety. This means that missing court appearances or unpaid fines will not result in the money being withdrawn.
It also means that around 75,000 Michiganders whose licenses have been suspended will automatically pick it up. There will still be penalties for unpaid fees or missed dates, but it will not be by license seizure.
“We really have two overarching goals here, one is to encourage good behavior and it doesn’t,” said Tom Boyd, state court administrator, “The other is to keep people out of jail who don’t belong there. If someone is in jail because they owe us $ 50, that does not protect us. We should limit the people who are in jail, to the people who need be in prison to improve public safety. ”
Drivers who qualify to reclaim their license privileges will soon be notified by the Secretary of State.
